Historical Overview of Peugeot

Early Beginnings: Peugeot’s history dates back to 1810 when the Peugeot family converted their cereal mill into a steel mill in Hérimoncourt, France. Initially, they produced steel products like saw blades, watch springs, and even crinoline skirts.

First Car: In 1886, Peugeot manufactured its first car, a steam-powered tricycle3. By 1891, they introduced the Peugeot Type 3, the first mass-produced car.

Early 20th Century: Peugeot continued to innovate, and by 1912, they had opened a purpose-built factory in Sochaux, France. This factory is one of the oldest car plants still in operation today.

Post-War Era: After World War II, Peugeot introduced the Peugeot 203 in 1948, which became one of their most popular models. The 203 helped re-establish Peugeot’s reputation in the post-war automotive market.

Modern Era: In 1976, Peugeot merged with Citroën to form the PSA Group. This merger helped Peugeot expand its market presence and technological capabilities. In recent years, Peugeot has continued to innovate with electric and hybrid vehicles.

Motorsport: Peugeot has a rich history in motorsport, including rallying, touring car racing, and even Formula One. Their success in motorsport has helped them develop high-performance road cars.           

POPULAR MODELS BY DECADE

1950-59 During the 1950s, one of Peugeot’s most popular models was the Peugeot 203. It was produced from 1948 to 1960 and became well-known for its reliability and durability. The 203 was Peugeot’s first new model after World War II and played a significant role in re-establishing the brand’s reputation in the post-war automotive market.

1960-69 During the 1960s, one of Peugeot’s most popular models was the Peugeot 404. Introduced in 1960, the 404 was designed by the Italian design house Pininfarina and became well-known for its reliability and durability1. It was produced in various body styles, including sedan, estate, and convertible, and was widely used in both Europe and Africa.           

1970-79 During the 1970s, the Peugeot 504 was one of the most popular models. Introduced in 1968, the 504 quickly gained a reputation for its durability and comfort. It was produced in various body styles, including sedan, coupe, convertible, and estate, making it a versatile choice for many drivers. The 504 was also named the European Car of the Year in 1969.           

1980-89 During the 1980s, the Peugeot 205 was one of the most popular models. Introduced in 1983, the 205 quickly became a best-seller due to its affordability, reliability, and sporty performance. It was available in various versions, including the iconic 205 GTI, which became a favorite among car enthusiasts.           

1990-99 During the 1990s, the Peugeot 306 was one of the most popular models. Introduced in 1993, the 306 was well-received for its stylish design, reliability, and versatility. It was available in various body styles, including hatchback, sedan, and estate, making it a favorite among many drivers.
